That Which Remains (2017)
Artist Statement
The following series is a portrayal of bones, peels and shells of food that are discarded immediately in meal preparation.
The inspiration for this project stems from my experience in food photography, as I prepared to capture the intricate details of various fruits and vegetables, I realized that there is something interesting about these scraps that I almost never paid any attention to. Seeking to find a new angle than just capturing a perfectly laid out platter of food, I soon began to observe and pay close attention to the pieces as they were peeled or chopped off to reveal the choice and preferred parts. The form and textures and shapes of these discarded parts allowed me to style them as minimal yet vibrant and heroic.
My decision to set up each piece to takes on the formation of the original which is intentional as I seek to create the impression that there is nothing out of the ordinary at first glance. I chose a clean and simple composition and the use of colorful background to give life to the objects and helps reveal the intricate details of each of them.
In this consciousness, before it is discarded, I’ll take a moment to appreciate and give these excluded fragments another life, capturing the beauty and delicacy of that which remains.
